The maximum speed allowed for bicycles will be 10 km per hour

Palma, the 25th of June, 2012.- In order to facilitate the use of bicycles in Palma, the city council has authorised the use of bicycles in the following areas for pedestrians and on the pavements of roads next to the bike lane:

- The pedestrian area of the Carrer Fàbrica.
- The raised walking area of the Avinguda Antoni Maura, next to even-numbered buildings.
- The pavement on the section of the Avinguda Joan Miró between the motorway of Ponent and Marivent, on the side of the street with odd-numbered buildings.
- The pedestrian street by the Convent de Sant Francesc.
- The Parc de la Mar.
- The pavement section of the Avinguda Comte de Sallent between the Carrer Blanquerna and the Carrer 31 de Desembre, on the side of the street with even-numbered buildings and the section between the Carrer Sant Miquel and the zebra crossing on the side of the street with odd-numbered buildings.
- The narrow roadway of the Passeig del Born.
- The Parc de Sa Riera.
- The section of the Plaça d'Espanya, from the bicycle crossing to the road access to the Olivar Market.

Some of the authorisations included in this decree correspond to requests made by the 'Palma en Bici' association during the meeting held by representatives of the group with the Department of Mobility on the 15th of June. Also taken into account were suggestions previously made by the Local Police Force and by municipal technicians from the Department of Mobility.

In order to rationalise bicycle use as much as possible, the regulations in some cases allow cyclists to cycle over connections between bike lanes, (e.g. the Avinguda Comte de Sallent or between the Carrer Blanquerna and the Carrer 31 de Desembre), or in large, open areas, such as the Parc de la Mar or have been implemented for safety reasons such as on the pavement from the Carrer de Joan Miró to the Marivent area.

These authorisations, which will be in force 24-hours a day, involve exemptions with respect to the Municipal Regulatory Ordinance for the Mobility of Cyclists; articles 11 and 12 of this law, which was approved by the Council Plenary Meeting of the 26th of April, prohibits cyclists from using footpaths and pedestrian areas.

The decree will come into force during July and the authorised areas will be shown by the sign "Espai compartit bici - vianants"(shared lane for cyclists and pedestrians).

In accordance with that established in articles 11.2 and 11.4 of the Municipal Regulatory Ordinance for the Mobility of Cyclists, the maximum speed allowed will be 10 kph.
